ana was glad to be with him on this mission, to know there was at least one person she trusted to have her back. and the company in the downtime wasn't so bad, she supposed )
So-- ( she's pushing one of the glasses towards him, settling on her bunk ) My first mission saw us on another planet.
( she knows that his have been through time even without the specifics of it. hers were a little different )

Their separation was unfortunate, but he cares about that less now that she's here. They have plenty of time to catch up--that's the convenient thing about time travel.]
We stayed on Earth. Just back in time.
[He gives her a little mock-toast, encouraging her to continue.]

( some from him but other tales, things that he may not have told her by angela and genji. very interesting tales and very indicative from who'd said what.
but she doesn't let on quite what she means, letting him sit hanging while she makes herself a little more comfortable, starting her tale )
They were not human. Or omnic. ( they'd never heard of omnics before but had at least dealt with humans in their past, that had made it somewhat easier ) Very hard to describe.
( their appearance, anyway. not animalistic enough to compare but still partly humanoid in appearance )

Aliens?
[Of course that’s what she’s describing. Jack has been a little better wrapping his mind around the existence of other species on other planets, but it’s still a lot to take in sometimes. He can’t imagine his first task for COST being on another planet.]
What was the mission?
no subject
( she'd nodded at his question of aliens. she didn't know if that was what they really were but she supposed it fit. they weren't human but they'd been gracious enough, thankful at the success of the mission )
We brought her home.

[Jack, for his part, doesn't appreciate the sparse details.]
There has to be more to it than that.
no subject
( she was getting there. give herself chance to get herself comfortable )
I wasn't on the team. ( much to her annoyance but she might have stood out a little ) But I did oversee it. They performed well.
( ana where are those deets )

old habits were hard to break and this was hers. ever the doctor, the nurturing soul who couldn't bear to see someone in pain, particularly not a friend.
shots had been fired on the mission, something not out of the ordinary in their history but this was supposed to be diplomatic. angela had tried to gently suggest that he didn't go, that perhaps he was out of practice for this sort of thing even if she didn't expect him to especially provoke anything. he hadn't, the shots had first come from an outside party and jack had saved lives, risking his for theirs.
grothia had brought him back, had made sure to pull him out and now it was down to angela to soothe the rest. the wounds wouldn't take long to heal, particularly not now that her staff had been returned, especially with the superficial nature of them but angela suspected that his pride would take more soothing )
Talk to me.
( she's starting to clean the blood from his arm, touch as gentle as her words )
Tell me what happened.

Let it heal itself, Angela.
[Pink scar tissue has already started forming, but all that really means is they need to work quickly, or the bullet that’s embedded in his arm will stay there as the wound closes above it. He tries not to flinch at her touch, and Jack isn’t particularly keen on discussing the details of the botched op.]
I’ve had worse.
[He’s always had worse. He’s lived through it all, and this will be no different.]

( and he should know by this point, by the years that they've worked together and their renewed efforts with cost that she won't let it be, that she's going to try and break him from this habit. not all help is necessarily a bad thing, jack morrison.
which means that she's already working on reopening the wound, giving enough access to remove the bullet as gently as she's able. which is a task but it's one that she's done before, even recently. at least, with cost having retrieved her staff, patching him back together (properly) will be an easy task )
Keeping this in wouldn't have been good for you.
no subject
[He just wants her to stop worrying so much, like it isn't woven into every fiber of her being. To his credit, he sits still and lets her fuss, barely wincing when she starts poking into the wound, a testament to just how many times this has happened.
When she pulls the bullet out, he winces, but that's all.]
See? Not so bad.
[Like she's the one who needs reassurance.]
no subject
Maybe one time this won't be necessary.
( ha... ha...... this was jack and angela knew that getting him to stop fighting was like getting him to stop worrying. they both cared too much and showed it in different ways )
no subject
[It's always going to be necessary, because fighting is what Jack does. He's not about to stop, not when there's still a mission to complete. What little self-preservation he had is largely gone now, though of course now that Angela knows who he is, it's hard not to feel at least a little guilty for what he puts her through.]
no subject
( she pauses, resting her hand on his shoulder, her head tipping down at him )
I know what this means to you, Jack. What it's always meant. But-- ( she sighs. would her words change anything in that head of his? ) --there are more options.

( aka happy holidays jack )
